My live private lessons begin with gaining an understanding of the student's background and goals (long and short term). Next, we discuss which musical vocabulary we will focus on. Finally, we create effective practice and study techniques best suited to the individual in order to move forward and apply to all future learning.
I am a firm believer that we all have different ways of learning and there are different methods of teaching. Through my experiences, I have discovered that the most valuable lessons occur when the teacher discovers a new method to share information and the student, in turn, learns a new way to absorb information.
As Afro-Cuban Music is rooted in oral tradition, "Live" experience and instruction has always been the method in which this art is passed down. However, online content has proven to be an invaluable resource for students, even more so given our current circumstances. It is my belief that a "healthy" combination of learning situations is important.
